Sheila Boles has had a career of “firsts” since arriving in Wilmington in 1973. She played on the first Women’s Basketball team at UNC Wilmington, and got the program’s first athletic scholarship a year later. At Hoggard High School, Boles also became the first woman in North Carolina to coach a boys’ varsity basketball team, and was also the first woman in New Hanover County to be a high school Athletic Director. For blazing those trails, and impacting thousands of lives, her community said “thank you” in a special way.
